At the Poe parking Garage, the installation by artist Pablo Valbuena was an investigation of light, space and perception. Using large-scale projectors, Valbuena used light as a physical material, and appears to build space in the way that bricks build walls. This was a temporary installation, running three nights.
The Portal is a digital gateway through the arts and was unveiled at Lights On Tampa 2011. Located permanently on the Riverwalk, it provides an everchanging and engaging platform for cultural and educational opportunities. Content on The Portal is expansive. In addition to commissioned artwork, a wide net is cast to include content from archival sources, scholars, health and environmental specialists. A companion website is in development. For Lights On Tampa, new work by video/animation artists Juliet Davis & Stephanie Tripp, Eva Lee, and Molly Schwartz was commissioned.
New to Lights On Tampa was Shadow Plays, a performance and participatory event that allows
for the exploration of light, with improvisational interaction and movement. Susan Taylor Lennon, of the University of Tampa and Jennifer Rosoff, of the Creative Movement Company, bring the ancient tradition of storytelling and entertainment to life with shadows creating a visual mirage at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park.
Other new media art installations new to downtown include are featured on the Lights On Tampa map. These include the new TECO Line Streetcar station, Port Parking Garage, and Tampa Museum of Art's lighted facade. These installations are permanent additions to the downtown.
