The Portal serves as a digital gateway through the arts. It is a platform for civic and cultural expression as well as for public engagement.
The Portal developed from Lights On Tampa 2009, and is a key cultural component for the Tampa Riverwalk. The Portal is pedestrian friendly structure featuring digital screens that will be placed at fixed locations along the Riverwalk. The initial Portal will debut the night of Lights On Tampa 2011 on Saturday, February 19th. The Portal will function as a linear gallery of images and be integrated with short educational messages about the Environment, Well-Being, and Humanities with all content for the being pushed through the lens of art. For Lights On Tampa 2011 artists Molly Schwartz, Eva Lee and Juliet Davis & Stephanie Tripp were commissioned to create new work for the Portal.
Lights On Tampa '09 artist Carlton Ward, Jr.'s photographic installation was featured on the portal prototype, installed at the Tampa Convention Center.
Design development is underway for the permanent on-site Portals.
